Studio NPL’s spring break camp once again brought Nashville teens together for a two-day digital literacy intensive. The camp partnered with the Metropolitan Development and Housing Agency (MDHA) to serve more than 40 youth from the Sam Levy Place Community Homes. Participants received laptops and spent the camp exploring hands-on ways to use technology in meaningful, engaging ways.
“This is the fifth time we’ve done this,” shared Studio NPL program manager Niq, describing the camp as a digital literacy intensive where participants spend the day learning to use their laptops in practical, engaging ways. The experience combined technical skill-building with creative exploration, including coding, 3D design, artificial intelligence, and music production. Studio NPL’s goal for the camp is centered on access and empowerment. “We’re showing them free software they can use so that they feel empowered to create and use technology in ways that are relevant to them,” Niq said.
Moments throughout the camp demonstrated its impact in real time. One student’s 3D Hello Kitty design became a peer learning tool, helping others better understand the assignment. Another student, who began the camp hesitant, quickly became one of the most engaged participants during an AI challenge and even helped guide his team. “Getting to do a hands-on activity around something they hear about all the time really made it click,” Niq said.
Beyond technical skills, the camp aims to foster a sense of connection and belonging. By bringing programming directly into neighborhoods like Sam Levy Homes, Studio NPL creates an environment where young people feel supporter and ready to learn. “We love going out into their communities. They feel comfortable. They are at home,” Niq said. With consistent mentorship and meaningful access to tools, Studio NPL continues to expand what’s possible for Nashville youth.
