Every educator and parent knows the shift: one week a child is fascinated by dinosaurs, and the next, their world revolves around ladybugs.
When young minds light up with curiosity, school libraries do heroic work to meet them where they are. But keeping pace with every child’s deep dive—or supplying a high schooler with specialized source material for a complex history thesis—demands more resources than any single school building can contain.
That’s where Limitless Libraries steps in.
A groundbreaking partnership between Nashville Public Library (NPL) and Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) with support from the NPL Foundation donors, Limitless Libraries ensures that physical distance never limits a student’s desire to learn.
Books Delivered Straight to the Classroom
The concept is simple and the reach, transformative:
- Student IDs double as library cards: Every enrolled MNPS student has built-in public library access attached directly to their student ID number. They can visit any of NPL’s 21 physical locations or access digital resources anywhere.
- Access across 21 locations: If a student places a hold on books housed across town, those titles are loaded onto delivery routes and shipped directly to their school library within days—free of charge.
- Tailored for every grade level: Elementary students can explore curated children’s catalogs, while older students gain full access to the broader system collection to tackle ambitious research projects.
Beyond expanding access, this collaboration is smart stewardship. By leveraging NPL’s existing purchasing power and vendor discounts to buy materials in bulk, the program saves Metro hundreds of thousands of dollars annually—dollars that remain in local education.
Celebrating the “Literary Athletes”
Limitless Libraries isn’t just about delivering books; it’s about building a community where reading is celebrated out loud.
Each year, middle schoolers across the district participate in Battle of the Books. The academic tournament brings teams together to compete in rapid-fire trivia rounds testing their knowledge of 16 books down to the finest detail.
For students who might not excel on a sports field or math team, this competition offers a platform where their focus and teamwork are held in high regard. The final bracket rounds take place on stage in front of a live audience. The winning team receives a champions’ ride back to their campus in a limousine, where classmates and teachers cheer their arrival.
It turns reading into a celebrated team sport, transforming reluctant readers into competitive, confident scholars.
The Power of Partnership
No single institution can solve every challenge in education on its own. Public libraries and school districts operate best when they share the load—combining logistics, funding, and community support to strengthen what is already working.
From generous corporate partners like the Dollar General Literacy Foundation to the dedicated librarians routing holds across Davidson County every morning, this network exists to ensure every student finds their place.
