Last year, Nashville Public Library reached more neighbors than ever before, connecting people, stories, and ideas across our community. With more than 7 million books and materials borrowed and more than 5.3 million digital resources accessed, shelves and screens were busier than ever. The Library welcomed 48,000 new library cardholders, reaching a powerful milestone: 43% of Nashville citizens now hold a library card.
Consistent reading throughout the summer helps children retain and strengthen their literacy skills, reducing the risk of the “summer slide,” a common learning loss that can occur when school is out. A study by MNPS confirmed that students who participated in the Summer Reading Challenge showed an increase in test scores from spring to fall. Overall, the program supports literacy through every phase of life, inspires greater engagement with library resources, and brings new visitors through NPL’s doors.
NPLF invited the community to show appreciation for local elected officials who support the library. With more than 90% of NPL’s funding coming from public dollars and budget discussions underway, the timing was especially meaningful. Library supporters wrote more than 3,900 postcards sharing personal library stories, which Library Ambassadors hand delivered to Metro Council members.
