In March 2025, Limitless Libraries will unveil its new bookmobile, a project three years in the making, developed with support from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation and brought to life by Matthews Specialty Vehicles. This mobile library aims to expand access to educational opportunities for students in Davidson County, beginning with Metro Nashville Public Schools’ charter schools, which often lack dedicated libraries and resources.
Syreeta Butler, program manager of Limitless Libraries, explains, “Charter schools in our state serve a unique demographic, with a majority of their students being economically disadvantaged and 85% identifying as minority students. This reality necessitates tailored educational support, and the bookmobile will play a critical role in providing access to quality, culturally relevant reading materials that enhance students’ education.”
When designing the bookmobile’s wrap, Butler envisioned something distinctive and eye-catching to stand out among the blue fleet of Tennessee bookmobiles. “As an admirer of graffiti art, I wanted to incorporate its bold colors, raw energy, and inventive designs. Graffiti is more than just visual art—it often reflects social issues, urban culture, and personal expression, giving voice to those who may lack access to traditional art forms. Libraries, too, give voice through books,” Butler explains.
The bookmobile’s exterior celebrates Nashville’s unique culture and community with a wrap that features the city skyline, cowboy boots, hats, and symbols of literacy, capturing the spirit of the city and the impact Limitless Libraries aims to achieve.
The collection of books onboard will adapt to each school it visits, reflecting the diversity of Nashville’s students, including many African American and Hispanic readers. “We are committed to Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop’s ‘Mirrors, Windows, and Sliding Doors’ philosophy, which posits that books serve as mirrors for students’ own experiences, windows into others’ lives, and doorways to immersive stories,” Butler says. “Our bookmobile will bring this vision to life, offering a collection that resonates with our readers.”
Limitless Libraries is committed to fostering a love of reading and improving literacy skills by offering accessible, high-quality materials. The bookmobile will help bridge educational gaps in Nashville, ensuring every child has the resources needed to succeed. The Dollar General Literacy Foundation played a crucial role in this initiative, funding the bookmobile’s purchase. Their commitment to Limitless Libraries’ mission and belief in its impact are invaluable. “We’re proud to partner in education with the Dollar General Literacy Foundation, ensuring that every child, regardless of their background or school, has access to the tools they need to succeed,” Butler says.
The bookmobile’s first stop will be Rocketship United Academy on March 21.
