2018 Current Events Cartoon Contest

Nashville Public Library Foundation (NPLF) invites middle and high school students in Metropolitan Nashville and Davidson County to submit a cartoon inspired by current events for consideration in honor of 2018 Nashville Public Library Literary Award honoree, editor of The New Yorker and author David Remnick.


  • Cartoon submissions will be accepted in two age categories:
    • 13–15 years old & 16–18 years old
  • 30 semifinalists (15 from each category) will be judged personally by Mr. Remnick
  • Ten finalists (five from each category) will be:
    • Honored and displayed at the Literary Award Public Lecture with David Remnick on
      Saturday, Nov. 10, 10 a.m., at Lipscomb University.
    • Shared on the Nashville Public Library’s and NPLF’s website and social channels.
  • Three “grand prize winners” will be selected from each category to receive additional prizes.
  • Submissions will be evaluated on the merits of humor, clear imagery and messaging; and relevant,current content matter.
  • All Finalists Attend Meet-and-Greet with David Remnick, Editor of The New Yorker


  • Any entry that does not comply with all of the following guidelines will be disqualified.
  • Any Metropolitan Nashville and Davidson County middle and high school student between the ages of 13 and 18 is eligible to enter
  • Each entrant is permitted one submission.
  • Artwork and messaging must be original, created by the entrant and unpublished (either in print or in an online journal.)
  • Deadline extended – The entry deadline is midnight, November 1, 2018. Mailed entries must be received on or before November 1.
  • Entries will not be returned.


  • Submit two copies of your cartoon by mail or one copy by email. Do not put your name or contact information on your cartoon, not even on the back of the page, and do not sign your cartoon.
  • Printed entries must not exceed 8.5 inches by 11 inches in size.
  • All entries must include a cover sheet with Student Name, Address, Telephone Number, Email, Name of School (public, private and homeschool students are all eligible) and Date of Birth.
    • Email entries to with the subject line “Contest Entry.”
    • Mail two printed copies of your submission to:
