Nashville Public Library Foundation Receives $440,000 Grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation to Support Adult and Family Literacy
[Nashville, TN] – May 25, 2016 – This week, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation awarded Nashville Public Library Foundation a $440,000 grant to support youth, adult and family literacy. This local grant award is part of over $7.1 million in grants awarded to more than 900 schools, nonprofits and organizations across the 43 states that Dollar General serves.
“The Dollar General Literacy Foundation has contributed more than $2.4 million to the Nashville Public Library Foundation over the last ten years,” said Tari Hughes, President of the Nashville Public Library Foundation. “The impact they continue to have on the Library and the Foundation’s capacity to serve our community is measurable, transformational and significant. We are incredibly grateful for this partnership.”
The grant will benefit three of Nashville Public Library’s literacy programs including Limitless Libraries, Adult Literacy and Bringing Books to Life and will directly impact more than 155,000 children, teachers, parents and adults in Nashville.
A renewed commitment of $350,000 for Limitless Libraries, a collaboration between Nashville Public Library and Metro Nashville Public Schools that shares books and educational materials with 86,000 MNPS students and teachers, will bolster the library’s children and youth collections and help meet the needs of teachers, students and parents across Nashville.
The grant’s $70,000 contribution to the library’s Adult Literacy program will allow the library to serve as a central hub for adults interested in high school equivalency attainment, English language acquisition, job skill development, digital literacy needs and more.
The grant also includes $20,000 to support the library’s award-winning family literacy program, Bringing Books to Life (BBTL). Centered on NPL’s literature-based puppet performances, BBTL equips teachers, parents and children with the skills and tools needed to foster reading readiness at home and lay the groundwork for future school success.
“Consistent with our mission of Serving Others, we are excited to provide these organizations with funding to further literacy and education across the communities we call home,” said Todd Vasos, Dollar General’s CEO. “It is always so exciting to see the true and meaningful impact the Dollar General Literacy Foundation has on both children and adults looking to improve their lives through literacy.”
