Lissy Mann

Elementary School Teacher and Mother of Three

Lissy Mann has her hands full. An elementary school teacher and mother of three bright, young and curious daughters, Lissy relies on the Nashville Public Library for entertainment, education and a cool spot for the girls to hang in the summer. Read Lissy’s story to learn how the library has helped inspire her family to love reading and the arts.

Etta and Lissy_WebHow long have you been coming to the Nashville Public Library?

We moved here eight years ago and have been coming to the library ever since. Once we came to a story time we were hooked. Etta, my oldest daughter, has been coming to the library since she was one. I now have three kids and have been at the library with them through every age – it’s been a fun experience for our whole family.

How do you encourage your kids to love reading?

I’m a teacher and my husband is an assistant principal at an elementary school. The fact that our kids love to read – and that the library is their favorite place – is a dream come true for us. My husband and I read a lot ourselves and have read to the girls since they were babies. As the kids have gotten older, we’ve continued that tradition and we read about a chapter of Harry Potter or Fancy Nancy every night together.

We are fortunate in that our kids read all year round. I do feel like part of that comes from being at the library and having so many things to do there in the summer. Etta knows the lineup of Puppet Shows and we love participating in the Summer Reading program together. Last year was the first year we participated as a family and it was fun to check out books, see String City and have conversations about what we were reading together.

Why do you like bringing your kids to the library?

Etta is curious about everything. It’s what I love about this library, the fact that there are so many opportunities for learning that are not just reading. My kids can sit through performances and plays and appreciate the music and the artists because they’ve grown up going to Puppet Shows. Etta is interested in acting and I know a huge part of that is from being at the library. She can see the joy it brings to other people and that’s really fun.

The library provides a safe, sheltered environment for kids to experience literature and the arts. From a teacher’s perspective there are so many different ways to engage your children at the library. Aside from just reading books, you can take your kids to the summer concerts or even to climb on the new rock wall.

The librarians and NPL staff are wonderful. This is undoubtedly a great space, but we couldn’t have the environment we have here without them. They have created such a safe and welcoming space where parents aren’t embarrassed if their kids are having a bad day. It really helps promote a positive experience around books.

This is Etta’s favorite place (literally her favorite place in the world). As a mom and teacher with three kids, well, that just makes me super happy.
